Middle School Study Hall
Middle school comes with a lot to manage. Students are expected to become increasingly independent just as their workload gets heavier and the academics get more complicated. MSSH gives them a consistent place to work, get support when needed, and simply be a kid…with increased responsibility. It allows their brains to take a small break from fighting with distractions and say, “Hey. Let’s get to work.”
MSSH Details
Grades: 6th–8th
Group size: Maximum of 6 students
Monday: 5:40–7:10 PM ($300/month due to less guaranteed sessions)
Wednesday: 4:40–6:10 PM
Thursday: 4:40–6:10 PM
Tuition: $350/month
Club Rad is conveniently located in the Inner Sunset, just half a block from the N-Judah. Students coming from A.P. Giannini can get here easily by public transportation, making it possible for many middle schoolers to get to Study Hall independently after school.
Students should bring their backpack, computer, current assignments, and anything else they need to get their work done.
What do students do in MSSH?
Students bring whatever school is asking of them that week. That might mean working through a math assignment, getting started on an essay, studying for a test, catching up on missing work, or figuring out how to tackle a project that feels overwhelming.
Along the way, we work on the skills that make all of that easier: keeping track of assignments, deciding what to do first, breaking big tasks into manageable pieces, getting started, managing time, and knowing when and how to ask for help.
Students will have plenty of time to work independently, but I'm there when they get stuck. Sometimes that means academic help; sometimes it means helping them make a plan, draft an email to a teacher, or simply get themselves moving again.
And it isn't silent study hall. There will be breaks, games, conversation, interesting problems, and time to reset. The goal is to get meaningful work done without making an already-long school day feel even longer.
Is MSSH a good fit?
MSSH is for middle schoolers who could use some support managing everything school asks of them. Some students need help figuring out what to do first or getting started. Others need academic help when they get stuck, a little accountability to stay focused, or simply a place to get their work done before they go home.
It can also be a great fit for students who are doing just fine academically but are ready to take more ownership of school. The goal isn't to make students dependent on more support. It's to give them a place to practice needing less of it.

Writing Lab
Writing asks students to do a surprising number of things at once. They have to come up with an idea, figure out what they actually want to say, organize their thoughts, choose the right words, and keep track of all the grammar and mechanics along the way.
In Writing Lab, we slow that process down and spend time practicing the pieces that make writing work. We'll play with sentences, learn grammar and how to use it, write stories, work on academic writing, experiment with different ways to say something, and revise pieces that aren't quite working yet. We'll also read great writing and talk about what the writer is doing that makes us want to keep reading.
There will be plenty of structure and direct instruction, but I don't want Writing Lab to feel like an extra English class at the end of the school day. I want students to become stronger and more confident writers while discovering that writing can also be clever, funny, surprising, weird, satisfying, and fun! This IS Club Rad, after all!

Group size: Maximum of 5 students
Tuition: $275/month
Writing Lab meets once a week for one hour. Students don't need to bring a particular school assignment or have something they're already working on; I'll provide the instruction, materials, and writing we use each week.

What We'll Work On
Sentences and grammar
We'll learn how sentences actually work, including parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, and the choices writers make to create clearer and more interesting sentences.
Stories and narrative writing
Students will have opportunities to invent characters, tell stories, write from their own experiences, and experiment with the parts of narrative writing that make a reader want to keep going.
Academic writing
We'll practice the kind of writing school asks for, including explaining ideas clearly, using evidence, organizing paragraphs, and turning a collection of thoughts into something another person can actually follow.
Revision
Good writing rarely arrives finished. Students will learn how to reread their own work, notice what's working (and what isn't), and make purposeful changes without feeling like they have to start the whole thing over.
Reading like a writer
We'll read short pieces and excerpts from great books and pay attention to how writers do what they do. Sometimes the best way to learn how to write a great opening is to read five great openings and argue about which one is best.
Who is Writing Lab for?
Writing Lab is for middle schoolers who could use more time and practice becoming better writers. Some students have great ideas but struggle to get them onto the page, while others can get the words down but need help developing, organizing, or revising their work. It's also a great place for kids who already enjoy writing and want the chance to play around with it a little more.
Students don't need to arrive thinking of themselves as "good writers." They just need to be willing to try things, share ideas, make changes, and occasionally write something a little weird.
Elementary Learning Lab
Elementary Learning Lab is a small-group space for 4th and 5th graders to strengthen the academic skills that make school feel more manageable. We work on reading, writing, math, organization and study skills, with plenty of room to slow down, ask questions and practice things more than once.

The group is intentionally small so students get real support without everything feeling like another tutoring session. We work hard, play games, build confidence and make time for the kind of learning that is actually fun.
Learning Lab Details
Grades: 4th–5th
Tuesday: 3:30–5:00 PM
Group size: Maximum of 4 students
Tuition: $325/month
Learning Lab meets once a week for 90 minutes. Everything students need for our work together is provided, although they're always welcome to bring something from school if there's a particular skill or assignment they could use help with.
Club Rad is located in the Inner Sunset, within walking distance to many schools.
What We Do
Learning Lab gives students time to work on the skills they need now while continuing to build a strong academic foundation. We might practice fractions, dig into a great reading passage, work on spelling and grammar, write a paragraph, or learn a better way to organize a multi-step assignment.
What we do will shift depending on the students in the group, but the goal stays the same: strengthen skills, practice good learning habits and help kids become more capable and independent students.

1:1 Tutoring
Because these sessions are highly individualized, I keep a limited number of 1:1 spots and generally recommend them when I think they're the best fit for a student's particular needs. If you're not sure what kind of support your child needs, you don't have to figure that out before reaching out. That's part of my job.
When might I recommend 1:1?
I may recommend 1:1 tutoring when a student has a specific skill gap that needs focused instruction, needs more repetition or individualized pacing, or simply isn't getting what they need in a group setting.
Sometimes 1:1 is a long-term fit, and sometimes it's a useful place to start before moving into one of the Club Rad groups.

1:1 tutoring is available on a limited basis and is generally offered when I think individual instruction is the best fit for a student's needs.
